On October 29, 1999, tenor Andrea Bocelli made his North American
operatic debut in Jules Massenet's Werther at the Michigan Opera
Theater. Teamed with mezzo Denyce Graves, an international star
in her own right, and soprano Ying Huang of the Butterfly film
fame, the event promised to be a highlight drawing Bocelli fans
from afar. According to published reports, many fans left disappointed.
The reviews were not very encouraging. Bocelli's voice, they
said, did not project over the orchestra.
On November 14, 1999 at 3 p.m.
EST, GMN.com will present a live webcast of the final performance
of the run, thus allowing internet viewers to judge for themselves.
