Anniversaires / Anniversaries

• S eptember 25th marks what would have been the 70th birthday of Canadian pianist Glenn Gould. Several tributes will be organized throughout the country to mark the event. For those who want to relive memorable events of the legendary pianist in the comfort of their own living room, Bravo! presents in September and October a variety of Glenn Gould-related programming, beginning September 25 at 9 p.m. with the unique film Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould. Not to be missed also will be Glenn Gould: Extasis on September 28 at 7 p.m. This program takes a look at the influence of the pianist, with extended commentary from experts, flashbacks and several black and white photographs. The CBC will telecast a special on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. And Radio 1 and Radio 2 will devote Sept. 25 to Gould culminating with a live broadcast of Bernard Labadie conducting Les Violons du Roy in Labadie's arrangement of Bach's Goldberg Variations. Sony Classical will reissue on Sept. 10 a box set of two Gould version of the Goldbergs. Glenn Gould died in October 1982 after suffering a stroke.
• Le 16 septembre marquera le 25e anniversaire de la mort de la Divina, Maria Callas, disparue à l'âge de 54 ans, plongeant les amateurs d'art lyrique dans le deuil. Pour souligner l'événement, la diva fera l'objet de cinq nouveaux livres. À noter surtout, Callas inconnue, chez Plon, son portrait par Madeleine Chapsal (éditions Michel Lafon) et celui écrit par Martin Monestier (éditions Le Cherche Midi). Au théâtre, Louise Marleau endossera le rôle de la cantatrice dans une reprise de la pièce Les leçons de Maria Callas, qui avait eu un beau succès il y a quelques années. Mentionnons également l'arrivée sur nos écrans du film de Franco Zeffirelli, Callas forever. Le réalisateur, qui a connu personnellement Maria Callas, livre sa vision des derniers mois de l'existence de la cantatrice. Il l'avait d'ailleurs lui-même dirigée dans plusieurs productions, incluant son grand retour sur scène à Paris et Londres dans Tosca. C'est Fanny Ardant qui, après l'avoir incarnée au théâtre, interprète le rôle de Maria Callas dans le film, aux côtés de Jeremy Irons (Larry Clark) et de Joan Plowright (Sarah).

Festivals

• Le Festival international de musique de chambre d'Ottawa a, cette année encore, connu un succès retentissant, malgré la canicule qui s'est abattue sur la région de la capitale fédérale lors de la première semaine de l'événement. Les recettes tirées de la vente des billets ont atteint près de 250 000 $ et plus de 3400 macarons-passeports ont été vendus. L'affluence la plus élevée a été atteinte le dernier jour, lors du concert consacré aux airs d'amour de Haendel. Le festival célébrera son 10e anniversaire en 2003. Nous y reviendrons.
• Grâce à la Société Pro Music, le Trio Contrastes a joué cet été à Londres et au Festival d'Edinbourg. Il a donné en tout huit concerts, au mois d'août.
• UK...OK is a year-long celebration of cultural exchange between the UK and Québec, at venues from Montréal to Métis. This showcase features innovative work in visual arts, film, music, theatre, dance, literature, design and multimedia. Stuart Jones' sound installation in the interior garden of the Biosphère, based on the notion that space can be enlarged and informed by a map of sounds that flow in it, is bound to delight the acoustically inclined. The writings of Buckminster Fuller, the architect of the Biosphère, are used in combination with sounds of water from around the world to heighten perception of the interior garden and its context.
• The Altamira Summer Opera Concerts of the Canadian Opera Company raised almost $30,000 for the Canadian Feed the Children Foundation, thanks to the generosity of Altamira Investment Services Inc. And the 10,000 people who attended the outdoor concerts this year. Highlights included the Toronto debut of Turkish bass Burak Bilgili, winner of the 2nd prize at the Jeunesses Musicales Montreal International Competition, and Quebec tenor Luc Robert.

Concours / Competitions

• La 63e édition du Concours OSM aura lieu du 13 au 16 novembre 2002. Le concours sera consacré aux cuivres, aux bois et aux instruments de percussion. Le concours se tiendra à la Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur de Montréal et les récipiendaires des premiers prix de chaque catégorie se produiront en concert avec l'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal le 1er décembre 2002. Le jury sera formé, notamment, du clarinettiste James Campbell, du flûtiste Timothy Hutchins, du timbalier Louis Charbonneau et du chef d'orchestre Rolf Bertsch. • La chanteuse Catherine-Elvira Chartier a remporté l'édition 2002 du Concours de Musique du Canada qui s'est déroulé à Ottawa du 23 juin au 7 juillet.
• Neuf prix ont été remportés par des Québécois lors de la 12e édition du Concours des jeunes compositeurs de la SOCAN. André Ristic a décroché le premier prix des catégories Serge-Garant (œuvres pour 3 à 12 interprètes) et Pierre-Mercure (solos ou duos) pour Motel [infini] et Environnement de cantate. Le premier prix de la catégorie Sir-Ernest-MacMillan (œuvres orchestrales) a été décerné à Patrick Saint-Denis pour Le discours aux animaux. En tout, 158 œuvres ont été proposées au jury du concours, formé de Chris Paul Harman, Jean-François Denis et Allan Bell.
• Jung Lim Kim, a 17-year-old pianist from Seoul won on July 27 the 8th Oberlin International Piano Competition and Festival. The second prize was awarded to American pianist Jeannette Fang, also 17. The competition is open to pianists aged 13 to 18.
• Baroque flutist Amy Guitry and baroque oboist Debra Nagy shared the top prize at the American Bach Soloists' International Oboe and Flute competition, held in June in California.

New Music

• Elliott Carter will receive his "Lifetime Achievement Award" in Westport, Connecticut, on September 22.
• John Adams has spent the summer completing a new work (a New York Philharmonic commission), a memorial to the tragic events of September 11.
• John Corigliano was composer-in-residence at the Sapporo Festival, in Japan.
• Richard Danielpour is currently working on his first opera and was in residence at the Villa Ubladini in Florence and at the New Jersey Symphony's Composition and Conducting Institute.
• The Orion String Quartet premiered John Harbison's String Quartet No. 4 at the La Jolla and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.

Orchestres / Orchestras

• In August and September, Tafelmusik will, once again, be the orchestra-in-residence at the Klang und Raum Festival in Irsee, Germany. The orchestra enjoys great popularity amongst the German public.
• Jeffrey W. Ryan is the new composer-in-residence of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Mécènes / Philanthropists

• Alberto Vilar has given away $250 million of his own money to the lyric arts. That includes $50 million to the Kennedy Center in Washington, $45 million to the Met in New York, £18 million ($25 million) to Covent Garden, $20 million to Valery Gergiev's Kirov company in St Petersburg, $10 million plus to Placido Domingo's Los Angeles Opera and one million in gifts to Salzburg, Bayreuth, Glyndebourne and La Scala. On October 12, he will marry Karen Painter, an associate professor of musicology at Harvard, whom he met last year at the Salzburg Festival. "I popped the question in the Second Act of Lohengrin," he told Norman Lebrecht (see entire text on our Web site). "By then, she had seen the ring and didn't want to give it up."
• Margot and Bill Winspear will contribute $42 million to the campaign to build the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts. The Center has set a goal of raising a total of $250 million through its campaign. To date, the campaign has raised more than $110 million, including the Winspears' gift. The opera house will be renamed the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House and will be arranged in the classic Italian horseshoe configuration and will seat approximately 2,400. Foster and Partners, a London firm led by Lord Norman Foster, the 1999 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, will design the building.
