W
e were saddened by the tragic events in New York on September 11. At the time, La Scena Musicale was organizing our Benefit Gala for the following day. The show went on. The musicians and the team at La Scena Musicale
dedicated the concert to Peace. It seems fitting that at a time of anxiety and
uncertainty, music would help to provide us comfort and
consolidation.
As a way of allowing
people to follow the impact and response of the classical music community to the
WTC, La Scena Musicale has created a special page on
its website to collect articles from around the world. The apparent misquote of
Karlheinz Stockhausen by the Hamburg press is among news items. Visit <wtc.scena.org

In a revealing article “A Fight at the Opera” in the September 2001 issue of Toronto Life, John
Lownsbrough presents the back room manoeuvres that have led to the present
uncertainty of the fate of the Canadian Opera Company’s planned Opera House.
After 20 years, the project is not much closer to reality. The feature has one
noticeable flaw. The photo spread of cities with their own opera houses
includes Montreal (which does not have an opera house) and a picture of
Theatre Maisonneuve instead of Salle Wilfrid Pelletier (the regular home of
L’Opéra de Montréal). Wah

On September 25, the TSO announced the resignation of Edward
Smith as Executive Director after less than a year on the job, while
announcing the need to secure $1.5 million in new operating funds by November
30. Smith’s reason for resigning was because in his judgement the internal
culture of the organization is probably beyond repair. Robert Weiss, Chairman
of the Board of the TSO, in a letter to the TSO Community stated “that the
Board agreed with Mr. Smith’s assessment of the need for change and renewal
but not his conclusions and reason for resigning.” Weiss also announced the
Board’s plan for restructuring. Former Ontario Premier Bob Rae and former TSO
Managing Director Walter Homburger have agreed to act as advisors. The TSO
will continue its search for a new Music Director, but no final decision will
be announced until after the restructuring. Sir Andrew Davis has agreed to act
as Artistic Advisor. Wah
