Canadian Baritone Louis Quilico Dies at 75
by / par Wah Keung Chan / July 16, 2000 The operatic world has lost one of its great voices. Canadian baritone Louis Quilico died at Toronto Western Hospital on the morning of July 15, 2000 following complications arising from knee surgery. A blood clot led to cardiac arrest. He was 75. Here is the official announcement. According to Julie Giles, his publicist, Louis had gone into surgery on Wednesday and a blood clot had arisen leading to cardiac arrest. By Friday night, it appeared that Quilico would not survive and he passed away on Saturday morning. Quilico leaves his wife, concert pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico; his son baritone Gino Quilico and daughter Donna; step-children Dominique and Alexandra Brégent; grandchildren David, Natascia, Enrico, and Sophia; his brother Anthony Quilico and sisters Madeleine Maynard and Georgette Danduront. Two years ago, I interviewed Quilico for an article in La Scena Musicale. The knee was giving him problems and he had talked of surgery, joking that he would return to the stage afterward. Quilico was turning more of his time towards teaching, and had produced a video called "The Voice Lesson" in which he has some interesting things to say about breathing (see his website).
