The George London Foundation for Singers: Update by Philip Anson
/ December 1, 1997
On Sunday 26 October at New York's Pierpont
Morgan Library, the George London Foundation for Singers held its
first recital of the 1998-99 season, starring Bass-baritone Bryn
Terfel and 1996 London Foundation Award winner soprano Christine
Goerke. Bryn Terfel spoke of his admiration for George London. "I've
learned a great deal from studying George London's Voice of
Firestone videos and his recordings. His Madryka under Solti is
unsurpassable! His voice was like a cello throughout its register. I
aspire to sing like that, but I doubt I'll ever be quite as good."
Upcoming London
Foundation recitals feature soprano Sheri Greenawald and baritone
James Westman on 8 February and mezzo Florence Quivar and baritone
Victor Benedetti on 19 April 1998 (tickets: 212-685-0008, ext.
347).
Each year two
London prizes are designated for Canadian singers. Last April
Canadian baritone James Westman won a $5000.00 George London
Foundation award and Canadian bass Randall Jakobsh won a $1000.00
encouragement grant. "George was born in Montreal and always
maintained close ties to Canada," explained Mrs. London, President
of the Foundation. "Many of our winners are Canadian and we
encourage Canadian singers to apply. I hope we'll be able to
establish a George London Recital in Toronto next year."
The 1998 Competition is open to Canadian and
US citizens born after 1 January 1963 who have had at least one
professional engagement. Application forms may be obtained from the
Foundation at tel: 212-772-2768 / fax: 212-396 9772. There is no
entry fee, but applications must be postmarked before 15 January
1998. Consult the George London Foundation web site at
