With this issue, La Scena Musicale is launching its 2012-13 fundraising campaign. The need is more acute this year, given the current economic climate and the state of arts funding as reported in Philip Ehrensaft’s thorough analysis.
As a leader of classical music information and news, we recently launched a new Industry column dedicated to connecting the arts community by highlighting new developments in music and arts organizations across Canada. In September, we introduced our parents’ column to support music education, and in December we will introduce a column on electronic instruments and consumer electronics. In the current issue, you will find our annual Higher Music Education Guide, as well as news and profiles of educators.
We are also excited about introducing the 2013 Musical Celebrity Recipe Calendar. Each of the 12 months in 2013 will feature a notable musician along with his/her favourite recipe. For instance, soprano Marie-Josée Lord shares her favourite Okra stew and Alain Lefèvre shares his famous Crêpes à la bière. World-renowned stars will be featured, including conductors Kent Nagano, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Jean-Marie Zeitouni; sopranos Isabel Bayrakdarian, Marie-Josée Lord and Shannon Mercer; countertenor Daniel Taylor; pianists Alain Lefèvre and Jan Lisiecki; and violinists James Ehnes, Hilary Hahn and Lara St. John. Priced at $20 (taxes included), this calendar is designed as an annual fundraiser for La Scena Musicale.
As Alain Lefèvre has said, “It is not enough to nurture the stars of the future – it’s crucial to create the next generation of music and art lovers as well.” Our organization, La Scène Musicale/The Music Scene, has been doing both for the past 16 years, with 200 issues reaching 10.5 million readers in print and 25 million online, despite not receiving government operating funding and relying on advertising for 80% of our budget.
As we begin our 2012-2013 fundraising campaign, we need your support. It is a crucial period for La Scena Musicale, and your donation will help us continue to promote Canada’s music and arts scene You can make a donation at www.lascena.ca.
On behalf of our dedicated team of staff and volunteers, I wish you a great musical season.
