CBC Head of English Services Leaves Post
Richard Stursberg left his post as the Director of English-Language Programming the first week of August. Since 2004, he had been responsible for English television, radio and online content. The Radio 2 decrease in classical music and the purchase of American television shows were two major moves that took place during his time with the public broadcaster. Differences between CBC President and CEO Hubert Lacroix and Stursberg were cited as a main cause of his sudden departure. A release by Lacroix claimed Stursberg’s focus on attracting ratings was compromising the broadcaster’s mandate as a public service. General Manager of English Television Kirstine Stewart will fill the position on an interim basis.

CINÉMA / FILM

Score: A Hockey Musical Chosen as TIFF Opening Gala Film
The world-renowned Toronto International Film Festival opens September 9 with a sports-story/musical smorgasbord. Actors include a bizarre array of performers including Noah Reid as a young rising hockey star, Olivia Newton-John as his mother, and Marc Jordan, George Stroumboulopoulos, Evan Solomon, Nelly Furtado and Hawksley Workman. If last year’s choice of Creation as the opening film stirred controversy because it was an English—not a Canadian film—one would be hard-pressed to critique this year’s pick for the same reason; you don’t get much more stereotypically Canadian than a hockey flick.

UK Film Council Abolished
The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport has announced it will disband the UK Film Council, which was founded in 2000. The DCMS promises that funding for films will continue, but through other organizations. The Council will shut its doors by April 2012.
