- Philippe Gervais
New National Music Centre design announced
Chosen out of 68 contestents, Portland-based Allied Works Architecture and local partner BKDI have won the hotly debated bid to build Canada’s $75-100-million National Music Centre, slated to open in Calgary in 2012.
80,000 square feet will be dedicated to a museum of historical musical instruments (many of which visitors will be encouraged to play) and other musical memorabilia, performance spaces, an education research centre, recording studios, a radio station, a seven-days-a-week live music venue, a suite for innovative and creative programs for people of all ages, and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.
Ambitious aspects of the chosen design include clusters of white towers dubbed “resonant cells” which will store the Cantos Foundation’s instrument collection, an interactive atrium of new media where visitors “play” a building in an as-yet vague method.
Construction will begin next year. Vancouver’s Identica, chosen in a similar competition out of 40 contesting agencies, will develop the brand and a name for the music centre. www.cantos.ca/kingeddy CC
CBC Orchestra triumphantly starts anew as the National Broadcast Orchestra
After the controversial dismantling of the CBC Orchestra last fall, its members have successfully reunited once again under the baton of Alain Trudel as the newly-minted National Broadcast Orchestra. The orchestra got off to a bumpy start when its opening fundraising gala announcement of its new season, slated for spring 2009, was delayed due to the sour economy. But on September 16, the NBO finally performed its inaugural concert at Salt Spring Island, B.C.
The NBO hopes to turn the dismissal from the CBC roster into lemonade by broadening its scope beyond the limitations of a radio-controlled orchestra. The projects unveiled by the orchestra are of a greater diversity than before, including live performances, radio and internet broadcasts, and specialized recording projects.
The orchestra will make its formal debut at its home base, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver, on January 8, 2010. The programme includes the premiere of CBC-commissioned work by composer Michael Oesterle, The Sparrow’s Ledger, the Prokofiev Classical Symphony which inspired Oesterle, new works by Alain Trudel and Allan Gilliland performed by trumpet great Jens Lindemann, and a rare performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No. 0, compiled and performed by Anton Kuerti from sketches by the Romantic master. CBC Radio 2 will be broadcasting the performance.
In the meantime, high-definition performance videos will be available shortly on the NBO website. www.nboc.ca CC
