Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic Live in HD! / Rattle et l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin en direct et en HD!

Under Sir Simon Rattle one of the world's oldest and best orchestras is leading the way in embracing new technology. Since January 2009 the Berlin Philharmonic has been offering what they call the Digital Concert Hall. Basically, it means that anyone can buy a subscription to watch webcasts of all the orchestra's Philharmonie concerts in Berlin. As you will see in the attached performance, the HD video and audio is state of the art. The prices are a little steep - 149 Euros ($214 CAD) for the season, 39 Euros ($56 CAD) for 30 days or 9.9 Euros ($14 CAD) for a single concert - but at least the experience is now available to anyone who cares to put up the money. I suspect that the prices will come down as more and more people subscribe but it is not cheap to film a concert in HD.

This video includes an excerpt from a performance given on September 13, 2009 and the music is the Shostakovich Symphony No. 4. This is one of the composer's most difficult but powerful scores and Rattle has championed the work for years. He recorded it with the City of Birmingham Orchestra in 1994 for EMI. This more recent performance with the BPO is even better.

En janvier 2009, l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin a lancé son site Internet Digital Concert Hall. Ce vidéoclip comprend un extrait d’une prestation donnée le 13 septembre 2009. La musique est la Symphonie n° 4 de Chostakovitch. C’est l’une des pièces les plus difficiles, mais très prenantes du compositeur et c’est une œuvre à laquelle M. Rattle tient à cœur depuis des années. Il l’a enregistrée avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Birmingham en 1994 pour EMI. Cette prestation plus récente avec l’OPB est encore meilleure.
