Happy 70th Birthday Christoph Eschenbach / Bonne fête, Christoph Eschenbach!

Conductor Christoph Eschenbach has just celebrated his 70th birthday (February 20th) with a special concert in Paris with the Orchestra de Paris and friends including Gidon Kremer and Yo-Yo Ma. In a few months he will step down as conductor of the Orchestre de Paris after ten years in the post. One of his recent triumphs is excerpted in this video: a performance of the Mahler Symphony No. 8 given with huge forces at the Palais Omnisports de Paris on March 6, 2008. Choruses came from London, Vienna and many other cities to take part. Eschenbach's performances of all the Mahler symphonies with the Orchestre de Paris will soon be put online for free streaming at the rate of one each month starting with the Symphony No. 2 on February 19 and concluding with the Symphony No. 7 in October. Next month he will conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra (all-Schumann), the New York Philharmonic (Brahms and Berg) and the National Symphony (Verdi Requiem). Next fall Eschenbach takes up a new position as music director of both the National Symphony of Washington, D.C. and the Kennedy Center.

Later this spring he will tour the United States with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, with Lang Lang as soloist.

Le chef d’orchestre et pianiste allemand a fêté son 70^e anniversaire le 20 février avec un concert spécial donné dans la Ville lumière par l’Orchestre de Paris et un groupe d’amis incluant Gidon Kremer et Yo-Yo Ma. D’ici quelques mois, il quittera cet orchestre après dix ans sur le podium.
