LE MOIS DE LA PHOTO À MONTRÉAL DÉVOILE UN APERÇU DE SA 11^e ÉDITION
Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal est heureux de dévoiler un aperçu de la programmation de sa 11^e édition, qui se déroulera du 10 septembre au 11 octobre prochain. L'événement automnal transformera la ville en une vaste exposition de photographie contemporaine.

Sous le thème Les Espaces de l'image, développé par la commissaire invitée Gaëlle Morel, la 11^e édition du Mois de la Photo à Montréal propose d'explorer la question des dispositifs et de la mise en espace, perçue comme une des clés de lecture essentielles des différents projets photographiques présentés au cours de ces dernières années.

Sorties de leur cadre traditionnel, les images se déploieront dans l'espace d'exposition sous la forme d'installations photographiques et vidéo. Le spectateur sera invité à faire l'expérience d'une variété de procédés visuels et sonores : agrandissement et monumentalité des tirages, projections multiples, conception in situ, fabrication et utilisation d'objets et de machines, etc.

EXPOSITIONS
Au programme : 24 expositions individuelles d'artistes en provenance de 13 pays et de 4 continents, qui associent leurs images à de véritables expériences scénographiques. Parmi ceux-ci, mentionnons : Luc Courchesne (Canada), Jeff Guess (É.-U./France), Alfredo Jaar (Chili/É.-U.), Emmanuelle Léonard (Canada), Oscar Muñoz (Colombie) et Beat Streuli (Suisse). Plusieurs oeuvres seront présentées en première nord-américaine et mondiale.

Les expositions et interventions extérieures seront réparties dans une variété de lieux de diffusion montréalais en partenariat avec des musées, galeries, centres d'artistes et maisons de la culture. La soirée d'ouverture et plusieurs expositions se dérouleront dans un édifice du quartier historique de Saint-Henri. Grâce à la générosité de nos partenaires, toutes les expositions et les activités ouvertes au grand public seront gratuites.

Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal est une biennale internationale de photographie contemporaine dont la première édition s'est tenue en 1989, afin de célébrer le 150^e anniversaire de l'invention de la photographie. LE MOIS DE LA PHOTO À MONTRÉAL PRESENTS ITS PROGRAM PREVIEW
Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal is delighted to present the preview of the program for its 11^th presentation, to be held from September 10 to October 11, 2009. This fall, the event will transform the city into a vast exhibition of contemporary photography.

Organized around the theme The Spaces of the Image, developed by guest curator Gaëlle Morel, the 11^th presentation of Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal will explore the questions of mechanisms and staging, perceived as essential keys to reading the different photographic projects presented in recent years.

Taken out of their traditional framework, images will be deployed in the exhibition spaces in the form of in situ photographic and video installations. Visitors will be invited to immerse themselves in a variety of visual and sound experiences: enlargement and monumentalization of prints, projections, the use of objects and devices, staging strategies, etc.

EXHIBITIONS
The event will feature 24 solo exhibitions by artists from 13 countries and 4 continents, whose practices combine images with scenographic experiences. Among them are Luc Courchesne (Canada), Jeff Guess (USA/France), Alfredo Jaar (Chile/USA), Emmanuelle Léonard (Canada), Oscar Muñoz (Colombia), and Beat Streuli (Switzerland). A number of the works are being presented for the first time in North America or as world premières.

The exhibitions and public space interventions will be presented in a variety of different sites across the city in partnership with museums, galleries, artist-run centres, and maisons de la culture. The public event launch and several exhibitions will be held in the historic Saint-Henri district. Thanks to the generosity of our partners, all of our exhibitions and activities open to the general public will be presented free of charge.

Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal is an international biennale of contemporary photography first presented in 1989, to celebrate the 150^th anniversary of the invention of photography. In 2007, the editor of the British Journal of Photography, Simon Bainbridge, listed Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal among the 10 best photographic events in the world, and named it North America's premier biannual photo festival.

High attendance at free and low cost events and steady paid admissions, make for a promising start to 2009

SEATTLE—Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame (EMP|SFM) has opened the new year on a high note with a promising start to 2009. In January, EMP|SFM welcomed 3,300 guests to its public programs, including an All Access Night on New Year’s Day, three Oral History Live! events with David Bryan, Jim Sherraden and Al Kooper; an Exposed: Inside Film screening of Pi and EMP|SFM’s annual Jazz in January programming.

Excellent attendance during these January events put January 2009’s overall attendance numbers seven percent over January 2008’s attendance numbers. In total, just over 18,000 people came through the museum’s doors via paid museum admission or to enjoy EMP|SFM’s public programs. Yearly overall attendance for 2008 was up three percent over 2007.

EMP|SFM will continue to provide free and low cost programming in 2009 with programs such as Oral History Live!, Exposed: Inside Film, Pop Conference and its Sound Off! underage battle of the bands competition.

EMP|SFM is proud to host the West Coast premiere of Jim Henson’s Fantastic World. This highly anticipated exhibition, organized by The Jim Henson Legacy and the Smithsonian Institution will be on view this spring and summer in the science fiction galleries at the museum.

Jim Henson’s Fantastic World

May 23-August 16, 2009
Jim Henson (1936-1990)—artist, puppeteer, film director and producer—created elaborate imaginary worlds filled with unique characters, objects, environments and even languages and cultures. His work is enjoyed in dozens of languages in more than 100 countries. Jim Henson's Fantastic World offers a rare peek into the imagination and creative genius of this multitalented innovator and creator of Kermit the Frog, Big Bird and other beloved characters.

The exhibition features 100 original artworks, including drawings, cartoons and storyboards that illustrate Henson’s talent as a storyteller and visionary. Among the variety of exhibition objects are puppets, television and movie props, photographs of Henson and his collaborators at work and original video productions, including excerpts from Henson’s early career and experimental films.

Jim Henson's Fantastic World was organized by The Jim Henson Legacy and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in cooperation with the Henson family, The Jim Henson Company, The Muppets Studio, LLC, and Sesame Workshop.

Spaced Out: The Final Frontier in Album Covers

August 15, 2009-Jan. 3, 2010

Organized by EMP|SFM, Spaced Out: The Final Frontier in Album Covers presents 117 spaced-themed record album covers released between the 1940s and 1969—the dawn of the space age. In the post-war years, humanity seemed on the verge of taking a giant leap into space. Futuristic themes filled popular culture. Space was the place, and everyone wanted to be there. Musicians thronged to the fad, and space themes invaded album covers of every genre including pop, jazz, folk and classical.

These album covers embody the fantasy and mystery of space—what we imagined it to be, what we hoped it would be.

Sweet Deal Sundays

Sundays in February, EMP|SFM visitors can park for free in the new Seattle Center Garage on 5^th Ave. N and Harrison St. Visitors can bring their parking stub with them to an admission desk, and EMP|SFM will deduct their $7 parking fee from a regular paid admission.

All Access Nights

In January 2007, EMP|SFM began offering free admission and live music from 5 to 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. Since its inception, the museum has welcomed more than 42,000 visitors during All Access Nights. All Access Nights are sponsored by The Boeing Company.

Family Days

EMP|SFM hosts Family Days on the third Saturday of every month. Family Day activities can include interactive art projects, live music from local bands, free instrument workshops and more. Family Days are sponsored by IKEA.

Oral History Program

EMP|SFM is proud to have an oral history archive of more than 800 interviews filled with tales from musicians, producers, authors, filmmakers and artists who have shaped American popular music and science fiction. More than a hundred of these interviews are featured in the Sound and Vision: Artists Tell Their Stories exhibition currently on display at the museum. In addition, the Oral History Live! series at EMP|SFM features intimate interviews before a live audience. Recent guests have included, Al Kooper, Krist Novoselic, Billy Cox and Clive Barker. Oral History Live! is sponsored by Wells Fargo and The Boeing Company. Upcoming Oral History Live! events include: Stockpiling Star Wars: Inside Gus and Duncan’s Comprehensive Guide to Star Was Collectibles Feb. 23 and Perspectives in Poster Design March 11.

Exposed: Inside Film

Through its Exposed: Inside Film series, EMP|SFM screens cult favorites and classic sci-fi films. Each screening is followed by a behind-the-scenes look through an interactive discussion with local filmmakers and experts in the subject matter, or with actors, directors or screenwriters associated with the film. Upcoming films include: Outlander Feb. 17 and Of All the Things April 21.

Sound Off! 2009

Sound Off! is the Pacific Northwest’s largest battle of the bands. A launching pad for musical careers, Sound Off! has enjoyed hosting many young up-and-coming bands over the years including Schoolyard Heroes, Idiot Pilot, Mon Frere, The Lonely H, Dyme Def, The Lonely Forest, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head and New Faces.

Early last year, EMP|SFM crowned New Faces as winners of Sound Off! 2008, since then, they’ve been propelled into Seattle’s music scene. Just a few months after their win, they were signed by Loveless Records, released their first album, Two Years—which was just named top local release of 2008 by Three Imaginary Girls, and played to adoring fans at Bumbershoot.

This year’s semifinalists include Dearboy, Dyno Jamz, Love Trucker, Schoolboy Gutbuster, Brier Rose, Free City Collective, Makeup Monsters, The Mission Orange, Cyrus Fell Down, Kids Get Hit by Buses, Razpy & The Vigilantes and Sol. Upcoming semifinal concerts are held Feb. 21 and 28, 2009 and the finals are held March 7, 2009.

Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival

EMP|SFM, in partnership with SIFF, presented the Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival Feb. 7, 2009 at the Seattle Cinerama Theater. The annual festival brings together industry professionals in filmmaking and the genres of science fiction and fantasy to encourage and support new, creative additions to science fiction and fantasy cinema arts.

After Hours

EMP|SFM is proud to partner with the National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) to present After Hours, a new all-ages event at EMP|SFM designed by teens for teens. After Hours is an exciting, new all-ages event that takes place three times throughout the year. The evening features a dance party with a local DJ in Sky Church and can include access to gallery spaces, live music by local bands and film previews from student filmmakers. The next After Hours event is March 27.

Experience: The Band

Experience: The Band began in fall 2007 as a partnership between EMP|SFM and the Berklee College of Music’s City Music Network.

This year-long, innovative, full scholarship program integrates instrumental and vocal instruction in rock and jazz, ensemble performance and musicianship classes with state-of-the-art online learning materials.

Experience: The Band rehearses together every Saturday from late September to early June, with several public performances scheduled throughout the year. Band members are also eligible to be considered for scholarships to Berklee College of Music’s five-week summer performance program, as well as full tuition scholarships to Berklee College of Music. Experience: The Band’s next showcase is March 21 at 1 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Experience: The Band is supported by JP Morgan Chase Foundation and Puget Sound Energy Foundation.

Pop Conference

The Pop Conference at EMP|SFM, now in its eighth year, joins academics, critics, performers and writers of all kinds to discuss popular music. This year’s conference topic is “Dance Music Sex Romance: Pop and the Body Politic.” The conference runs April 16-19, 2009.

Lessons & Workshops

Lessons & Workshops at EMP|SFM are weekend and evening classes for adults and teens 16 and older. This series provides in-depth, hands-on training on a specific music or science fiction-related topic. Lessons & Workshops are added throughout the year. Guitar 102 begins Feb. 18 and Stayin' Alive: Rock Band for Adults begins April 27.

Camps and Teen Artist Workshops

EMP|SFM’s Camps and Teen Artist Workshops take youth on a journey of artistic exploration and self-discovery during their spring and summer breaks. 2008 Wallace Excellence Award

In November, EMP|SFM was granted a 2008 Wallace Excellence Award. EMP|SFM was among eight other Seattle arts organizations to receive the prestigious award, including On The Boards, One Reel, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Opera, Seattle Repertory Theater, Seattle Youth Symphony and SIFF. EMP|SFM is thrilled to be among this impressive list of local arts organizations and to be honored by The Wallace Foundation.

EMP|SFM received a $585,000 grant to expand and enhance youth-driven programming that leverages the museum’s unique collections and offerings to generate online content for the public. The museum will announce its specific plan to implement the grant later this year.

American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print
October 11, 2008 – July 16, 2009
American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print illustrates the fascinating fusion of art with popular culture and music history. Featuring the work of one of the nation's oldest operating printing shops—Nashville, Tennessee's Hatch Show Print—the exhibition highlights the uniquely American posters produced to advertise everything from vaudeville shows, state fairs and stock car races to the Grand Ole Opry, Elvis Presley and Herbie Hancock.

Founded in 1879 in Nashville, Tenn., Hatch Show Print is still a working letterpress and design shop, creating posters today using the same letterpress methods as yesterday. American Letterpress: The Art of Hatch Show Print features historical and contemporary posters and original wooden print blocks—some never before seen by the public.

The exhibition, organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, is supported by America's Jazz Heritage, a Partnership of The Wallace Foundation and the Smithsonian Institution. Robots: A Designer's Collection of Miniature Mechanical Marvels

Robots: A Designer's Collection of Miniature Mechanical Marvels celebrates our long fascination with humankind's technological version of itself. This exhibition draws from a one-of-a-kind assemblage of toy robots, which noted designer Tom Geismar has been collecting for decades. Inspired by antique tin and wooden toys, samurai warriors and mid-20th century Japanese film characters, these intricately detailed and beautifully designed miniatures are set against EMP|SFM's backdrop of life-sized robots, androids and cyborgs from the world of science-fiction film and television.

Jimi Hendrix: An Evolution of Sound
April 26, 2008 – April 11, 2010
Jimi Hendrix: An Evolution of Sound illustrates Hendrix's musical evolution from his early days in Seattle, to his time as a journeyman musician touring the southern "chitlin' circuit" and in New York City, to his explosion on the popular music scene in London and beyond. The exhibition and the visitor experience weave together the various musical styles and cultures that Hendrix soaked up throughout his all-too-short journey.

Rendez-vous avec l’Histoire!

Rencontre de deux régiments historiques

MONTRÉAL, le 24 juillet – Dans le cadre de l’exposition Peurs bleues, le Musée du Château Ramezay sera l’hôte d’une rencontre solennelle entre le groupe Tambours et Fifres La Fayette ainsi que la Compagnie Franche de la Marine, le dimanche 3 août à 10h.

Au son des fifres et des tambours, les deux compagnies militaires proposent un rendez-vous avec l’Histoire. La Compagnie Franche de la Marine fut envoyée en Nouvelle-France en 1683 pour protéger la colonie française en Amérique. Jusqu’à la capitulation de Montréal, elle prend part à tous les affrontements. Après la Conquête, bon nombre de soldats s’établissent dans la colonie.

Fiers représentants de la tradition musicale et de l’histoire maritime de la France, vêtus de la tenue du Corps Royal de la Marine de Rochefort (1772), les Tambours et Fifres de La Fayette commémorent la traversée de l’Atlantique effectuée par La Fayette, venu prêter main forte aux insurgés américains durant la Guerre d’indépendance des États-Unis. Le groupe de Rochefort est exceptionnellement au Québec pour participer à la Fête des chants de marins de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, du 14 au 17 août.

Lors de cette rencontre, un échange de drapeaux symbolisera la fraternité établie non seulement entre les deux compagnies, mais aussi entre les deux pays. Parade militaire, démonstrations musicales et salves d’honneur couronneront cette rencontre mémorable qui se déroulera dès 10h, dans les jardins du Musée du Château Ramezay.

Un rendez-vous avec l’Histoire à ne pas manquer!

Rappelons que cet évènement est organisé en collaboration avec La Fête des chants de marins de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli et le Musée Stewart. L’exposition Peurs bleues présentée au Musée du Château Ramezay jusqu’au 19 octobre 2008, est une adaptation de l’exposition conçue par La Corderie Royale – Centre International de la mer à Rochefort.

Meeting With History!

Meeting between two historic regiments

MONTRÉAL, July 24, 2008 – In conjunction with the Here Be Monsters exhibition, the Château Ramezay Museum will host a formal gathering between the Tambours et Fifres La Fayette and the Compagnie Franche de la Marine groups on Sunday, August 3 at 10:00 a.m.

Accompanied by the sounds of fifes and drums, the two regiments have planned a meeting with History. The Compagnie Franche de la Marine was sent to New-France in 1683 to protect the French colony. This regiment was involved in all the armed disputes until Montreal’s surrender. After the defeat, several soldiers settled in the colony.

Proud representatives of the musical tradition and the maritime history of France, dressed in the Corps Royal de la Marine de Rochefort uniform (1772), the Tambours et Fifres La Fayette group will commemorate La Fayette’s voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to help fight with the American insurgents during the American Revolutionary War. The Rochefort Group is in Québec to take part in the Fête des chants de marins de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli from August 14 to 17, 2008.

Upon meeting, the two regiments will exchange flags which will symbolize the fraternity established between the two regiments and, what is more, the two countries. A military parade, several musical demonstrations and honorary salvos will conclude this memorable gathering that will begin at 10:00 a.m., in the Château Ramezay Museum’s gardens.

This is a meeting with history that you cannot miss!

Reminder that this event has been organized in combination with the La Fête des chants de marins de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and the Stewart Museum. The Here Be Monsters exhibition is presented at the Château Ramezay Museum until October 19, 2008 and has been adapted from an exposition created by La Corderie Royale – Centre International de la mer à Rochefort.

A riveting music-drama of a Holocaust survivor

Ottawa, Canada - Through Roses, a music-drama by composer Marc Neikrug that is certain to move audiences, will be performed for the first time in Ottawa by Canadian actor Saul Rubinek, violinist Pinchas Zukerman and an ensemble of seven musicians on Tuesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 16 at 7:30 pm at the Barney Danson Theatre of the Canadian War Museum. NAC Orchestra Music Director Pinchas Zukerman has long wished to bring this meaningful story to Ottawa.

Through Roses was written by Marc Neikrug in 1980 and there have now been over 500 performances in 15 countries in 11 languages. The role of the Holocaust survivor once destined to become a great artist will be played by acclaimed Canadian star of stage and screen Saul Rubinek, the son of Holocaust survivors who began his career in Ottawa before going on to appear in such movies as The Contender, Nixon, True Romance, Unforgiven, Wall Street, Bonfire of the Vanities, Against All Odds, and Sweet Liberty, and TV such as a recurring role on Frasier. Violinist Zukerman, born in Israel to Holocaust survivors, interprets the violin part composed with him in mind by composer-pianist Marc Neikrug, Zukerman’s longtime recital partner. There are seven other stellar musicians in the ensemble which will be conducted by Marc Neikrug.

As heartbreaking recollections of concentration camp scenes unfold, music and words merge to evoke emotions that will remain with audiences for a long time. Neikrug, who wrote the text as well as the score, says: “During World War II there were musicians in Hitler’s death camps who were kept alive in order to perform. They were made to play marches every morning and evening for the work details leaving and returning to the camp.… The foundation of all spirituality and elevated humanity in music lies, for me, in the great German tradition. Playing that music in those camps represents a grotesque paradox.”

The evening opens with Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor performed by Pinchas Zukerman, violin; Jethro Marks, viola; Amanda Forsyth, cello, and Marc Neikrug, piano.

Through Roses is a unique collaboration between the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Canadian War Museum in conjunction with Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race, an exhibition organized and circulated by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

MONTRÉAL, le 25 juin 2008 – Ah, les histoires de couple… L'amour est parfois douloureux, surtout lorsque le bourreau est impliqué ! Le Musée du Château Ramezay vous propose de participer à des procès historiques s'étant véritablement déroulés dans la colonie, en assistant à Passions et Scandales.

La foule pourra juger trois cas archivés qui ont fait scandale à Montréal entre 1658 et 1702. Que ce soit les manigances de sorcellerie de Bourjoly, les péripéties de Mathurine et de son mari bigame ou le meurtre sanglant du sieur La Chaume, chaque affaire implique un amant accusé d'un acte de vengeance. Mais si les histoires de cœur qui tournent mal ne datent pas d'hier, les méthodes punitives, elles, ont grandement changé. La femme du sieur La Chaume sera-t-elle bannie de Montréal? Bourjoly sera-t-il pendu? La cour de justice tranchera.

Les représentations ont lieu dans la Salle de Nantes, les jeudis (en français) et vendredis (en anglais) à 18h, en juillet et août.

Passions and Scandals

MONTREAL, June 25, 2008 – Oh, love stories… Love is sometimes painful, especially when the executioner is involved! The Château Ramezay Museum invites you to participate in historical trials that actually took place in New France by attending Passions and Scandals.

The audience will be able to judge three documented cases that scandalized Montreal between 1658 and 1702. Whether it is Bourjoly's hexing schemes, the misadventures of Mathurine and her bigamist husband, or the gory murder of sieur La Chaume, every case involves a lover accused of committing a vengeful act. But if these stories of love gone wrong happened centuries ago, would their punishments be the same? Would sieur La Chaume's wife be banished from Montreal? Would Bourjoly hang? The court of justice will lay down the law.

These performances will take place in the Salle de Nantes room on Thursdays (in French) and Fridays (in English) at 6:00 p.m., during July and August.

The Château Ramezay Museum is located right in the heart of Old-Montreal, next to the Champ-de-Mars metro station and the Place Jacques-Cartier, facing Montreal's City Hall.

Le Saint-Laurent de la mer : l'imaginaire, les fantômes et la peur

MONTRÉAL, le 10 juin 2008 – Dans le cadre de l'exposition Peurs bleues, le Musée du Château Ramezay propose, le 14 juin 2008 à 14h, une conférence intitulée Le Saint-Laurent de la mer : l'imaginaire, les fantômes et la peur présentée par Monsieur Gaston Desjardins.

Cette conférence propose un voyage à travers une multitude d'histoires de mer, depuis le littoral de l'Europe atlantique jusqu'aux rives du Saint-Laurent. Les angoisses et la fascination de l'océan, l'attirance des confins et des îles merveilleuses, les récits légendaires du Québec maritime et l'héritage culturel européen seront les sujets fascinants de cet exposé.

Gaston Desjardins est professeur d'histoire à l'Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR). Ses activités de recherche et d'enseignement portent principalement sur l'histoire de l'imaginaire maritime au Québec et en Occident. Il a notamment rédigé le livre La mer aux histoires. Voyage dans l'imaginaire maritime occidental. De l'antiquité méditerranéenne jusqu'aux rives du Saint-Laurent, en plus de participer à de nombreux ouvrages collectifs.

Montreal, June 10, 2008 – The Château Ramezay Museum invites you to a conference called The Saint Lawrence of the Sea: The Imaginary, the Ghosts, and Fear on June 14 at 2:00 p.m. held in the Here Be Monsters exhibit. The conference is hosted by Mr. Gaston Desjardins.

This conference proposes a voyage through a multitude of stories about the sea—covering the ocean-span between Europe's Atlantic and the Saint Lawrence riverbank. The distress and fascination caused by the ocean, the allure of the sea lines and the marvellous islands, the legendary accounts of nautical Quebec and the European heritage are fascinating topics that will be covered in this symposium.

Gaston Desjardins is a history professor at the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR). His research and teachings focus primarily on the history of sea tales in Quebec and the West. He is the author of La mer aux histoires. Voyage dans l'imaginaire maritime occidental. De l'antiquité méditerranéenne jusqu'aux rives du Saint-Laurent, in addition to contributing to various collective works.

When the Sea spawns Legends…

MONTRÉAL, May 14, 2008. The love-hate relationship between people and the sea, from the 15th century to today, is the fascinating subject of the exhibition "Here be Monsters" presented by the Château Ramezay Museum, from May 21 to October 19, 2008, as a contribution to the celebration of the 400^th anniversary of the founding of the first French colony in the New World.

Adapted from an exhibition created by La Corderie Royale- Centre international de la Mer in Rochefort, France, "Here be Monsters" takes you on a voyage that plumbs the depths of human imagination and the deep blue sea. To early explorers, the sea was a world without landmarks, inhabited by monsters, threatening tempest, sickness and piracy.

As the first obstacle to be overcome when venturing to settle in the Americas, the sea put its stamp on the cultural identity of Quebec. From the shores of Europe to the barks of the St. Lawrence, maps, charts, travel accounts, cutlass, figurehead and much else reveal the secrets of this hostile universe.

Set your sail…. the sea is calling you!
