L'Orchestre 21, qui compte 40 jeunes musiciens de grand talent du Québec, est un organisme à but non lucratif qui collabore avec le Gesù - Centre de créativité, situé au cœur de la ville de Montréal. Le chef d'orchestre, Maestro Paolo Bellomia, est professeur de direction d'orchestre aux cycles supérieurs à la faculté de musique de l'université de Montréal et responsable des classes de direction. Il possède un vaste répertoire depuis les symphonies de Mozart jusqu'aux œuvres de Boulez. Ses prestations, en tant que chef invité, l'ont emmené tour à tour en Autriche, au Brésil, en Bulgarie, en Équateur, en Espagne, en France, en Italie, au Mexique, en République Tchèque, en Russie, aux États-Unis et au Canada.

Lieu historique, reconnu bien culturel depuis 1975, l'amphithéâtre du Gesù est une salle de concert où la modernité rencontre la tradition. Dotée d'une jauge de 427 sièges, cet espace unique est serti de colonnes de pierres témoins des 145 ans d'héritage artistique et académique. Cinq concurrents se méritent une place à la finale du nouveau Concours international d'orgue du Canada et le prix Messiaen est décerné à Andrew Dewar

Montréal, le 15 octobre 2008 – La première édition du Concours international d'orgue du Canada (CIOC) continue sur sa lancée, maintenant que le nombre de concurrents dans la deuxième épreuve est passé de neuf à cinq. Alors que la première épreuve rassemblait à l'église Immaculée-Conception 15 concurrents de onze pays présentant des récitals composés d'œuvres des 17^e et 18^e siècles avec une place de choix au répertoire de Bach, la deuxième épreuve regroupait neuf concurrents de sept pays. En effet, les 13 et 14 octobre sur l'orgue Casavant de l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, chaque concurrent a présenté un récital de 55 minutes composé d'œuvres des 19^e et 20^e siècles, avec une place de choix au répertoire de Olivier Messiaen. Des neuf concurrents, cinq ont été retenus par le jury pour la finale.

Seul concours international d'orgue des Amériques en 2008, le CIOC tient sa première édition à Montréal du 8 au 19 octobre dans trois églises. Les concurrents sélectionnés se disputent des prix et bourses totalisant 72 000 $. À l'exception du prix du public Richard Bradshaw, le jury international du CIOC, composé de neuf éminents spécialistes de la musique d'orgue, attribuera tous les prix. D'ailleurs, à l'issue du récital du dernier concurrent hier soir, le jury a délibéré pendant environ trente minutes avant de rendre sa décision sur les cinq concurrents admis à la finale et le récipiendaire du prix Messiaen de 5 000 $. C'est le directeur artistique du CIOC et président du jury, John Grew, qui a dévoilé les noms des cinq finalistes :

« Le CIOC est un concours de haut niveau, attirant 15 virtuoses de l'orgue pour sa toute première édition. C'est un véritable accomplissement! Quel que soit le résultat, ces 15 concurrents font désormais partie de l'histoire et du succès du CIOC », a affirmé John Grew.

Prix Messiaen

La deuxième épreuve s'est clôturée avec le dévoilement du récipiendaire du prix Messiaen de 5 000 $. Noël Spinelli, le président du conseil d'administration du CIOC, a annoncé le choix du jury. Le prix est allé au concurrent britannique, Andrew Dewar, dont l'interprétation des pièces imposées de Messiaen, soit Le mystère de la Sainte Trinité et Offrande et Alléluia final, était émouvante. « Je ne suis pas surpris qu'Andrew ait remporté le prix Messiaen. Il est en fait lauréat d'un grand nombre de concours, dont le Concours d'orgue international de St. Albans. J'ai hâte à la finale. Je suis sûre que ce sera spectaculaire! », a déclaré M. Spinelli.

Une finale exceptionnelle

La finale se tiendra ce vendredi 17 octobre sur l'orgue Casavant de la basilique Notre-Dame à compter de 14 h avec, dans l'ordre de passage, les récitals de Els Biesemans, Jens Korndörfer et Andrew Dewar. L'épreuve reprendra à 20 h avec les deux derniers finalistes, soit Dongho Lee et Frédéric Champion. Les cinq finalistes présenteront chacun un récital de 60 minutes, dont ils ont choisi eux-mêmes le répertoire. En fin de soirée, le jury dévoilera les lauréats du Concours, c'est-à-dire les récipiendaires du premier, deuxième et troisième prix.

Quant au prix du public Richard Bradshaw de 5 000 $, le public le décernera à l'un des cinq concurrents qui se produira lors de l'épreuve finale. « Ce prix honore la mémoire de notre ami et collègue, le regretté Richard Bradshaw, qui a fortement encouragé la tenue du Concours », a précisé John Grew, directeur artistique du CIOC. Le public pourra voter sur place le 17 octobre ou sur le site Internet du CIOC (www.ciocm.org) jusqu'à midi le 19 octobre. Ce prix sera annoncé lors de la cérémonie de remise des prix dans le cadre du concert gala de clôture le dimanche 19 octobre à 19 h 30 à l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Mme Diana Bradshaw présentera en personne le prix du public dédié à la mémoire de son mari Richard Bradshaw.

Pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico, whose latest recording, Ings, has been garnering much airplay, will perform selections from the two-CD set in a Music Mondays performance, August 25 at 12:15 p.m., at the Church of the Holy Trinity (behind the Eaton Centre). Among the works she will perform are Ann Southam’s Glass Houses, Masamitsu Takahashi’s Capriccio; Wannabe a Rag and All Boogies by Bill Westcott, some Art Tatum selections and a work by Olivier Messiaen.

Ings – a two-CD compilation of live performances, mainly of Canadian and American composers, recorded by CBC Radio during the last few years – has received much airplay on CBC Radio, particularly on both the weekday and weekend editions of The Signal. It has also been played on other Canadian stations and in the U.S. John Stape of Review Vancouver wrote, “These pieces, so diverse in origin, are brought vividly to life, and each given loving treatment. The musicality is deft and knowing, and the intelligence informing the performances generous and warm. This is an album for the Ipod or MP3 player of anyone interested in the contemporary piano repertoire – it’s already been transferred to mine.”

Among other upcoming concerts in 2008-09 are two Toronto performances that she gave in July at the Sound Symposium in St. John’s, NL.

The first, Tuesday, October 7 at 7:30 pmHall, Accolade East, York University, will feature the Toronto premiere of Ann Southam’s new cycle of Creeks and Rivers, which includes new works written for her. at the Tribute Communities Recital Calling the concert Soundstill, she describes it as “an hour and a half of introspective and virtuosic music.” In the 17 movements are the premieres of Commotion Creek, Fidget Creek, Fiddle Creek and Noisy Creek, as well as Spatial View of Pond II.

Her second performance from the Sound Symposium will be a joint performance with dancer Terrill Maguire – again featuring an Ann Southam work, (date and location TBA).

Another collaborative project will take place at York University’s Tribute Communities Recital Hall, Accolade East, Tuesday, January 27, 7:30pm when she performs music for piano and violin with former Toronto Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Jacques Israelievitch, who has just joined the York University Fine Arts Faculty – of which Petrowska Quilico is a Full Professor.

A great proponent of women composers, Petrowska Quilico is also planning a second CD of works by women composers (not counting her triple-CD set of Ann Southam’s Rivers on Centrediscs). She was also one of several pianists featured when CBC Radio commissioned 10 prominent Canadians to compose fugues in honor of Glenn Gould’s 75^th anniversary. Her performances of Ana Sokolovic’s Prelude and Fugue for GG and Kati Agocs’ Nostalgia for Airs Unheard have aired many times on CBC Radio’s The Signal and Music and Company.

UNE SAISON ESTIVALE ANNONCIATRICE

Montréal, le 19 juin 2008: Forte de son dernier concert au Sharon Temple, Louise Bessette entame une série de concerts au Québec et en Ontario, dont deux en juillet en compagnie de Simon Aldrich (clarinette), Yegor Dyachkov (violoncelle) et Olivier Thouin (violon). En effet, nos quatre musiciens reprendront le Quatuor pour la fin du temps à la Maison Trestler, le 9 juillet 2008 à 20h00, et dans le cadre du Festival de Musique de Lachine, au Pavillon de l'Entrepôt, Complexe Guy Descary, le 11 juillet 2008, à 20h00.

Le Quatuor pour la fin du temps est un choix qui s'imposait pour la formation musicale. En effet, ces quatre musiciens seront appelés à rejouer cette oeuvre lors des différentes manisfestations coordonnées par Automne Messiaen 2008 qui prendront place dans la communauté du grand Montréal afin de souligner le centième anniversaire de naissance d'Olivier Messiaen. Il était donc de mise de vouloir initier le public à la musique de Messiaen par l'interprétation d'une oeuvre marquante dans l'évolution expérimentale du compositeur. En effet, cette pièce est empreinte d'un langage musical essentiellement immatériel, annonciateur des recherches musicales à venir du compositeur. Elle demeure, de nos jours, un hommage poignant à la vie et l'humanité. Aucune autre composition de chambre pouvait exprimer aussi pertinemment la pensée du compositeur. Au même programme, et explorant résolument l'école française, la Première Rhapsodie pour clarinette et piano de Debussy ainsi que la Sonate pour violon et violoncelle de Ravel.

Musicienne chevronnée et pianiste de haute voltige, Louise Bessette est une artiste constamment recherchée et estimée. Elle a une vingtaine d'enregistrements à son actif. Premier Prix au Concours International de Musique Contemporaine de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Premier Prix au Concours International Gaudeamus, Prix Opus "soliste de l'année", 1996-1997, pour son récital consacré aux Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus d'Olivier Messiaen, membre de l'Ordre du Canada (2001), Officier de l'Ordre national du Québec (2005), Louise Bessette cumule les distinctions honorifiques, soulignant l'importance de son apport musical. Depuis 1996, elle est titulaire d'une classe de piano au Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal.

SUMMER CONCERTS WITH SIGNS OF THE FALL TO COME

Montreal, June 19, 2008: Deriving strenght from her last performance at Sharon Temple, Louise Bessette is now engaged in a series of concerts throughout Québec and Ontario, including two concerts in July with colleagues Simon Aldrich (clarinet), Yegor Dyachkov (cello) and Olivier Thouin (violin). These wonderful musicians will present once again the Quatuor pour la fin du temps at the Maison Trestler, on July 9, 2008 at 8PM, and for the Festival de Musique de Lachine, at the Pavillon de l'Entrepôt, Complexe Guy Descary, on July 11, 2008, at 8PM.

The Quatuor pour la fin du temps was the logical choice for the musical quartet as they will be asked to play the masterpiece more than once throughout the upcoming fall. Thanks to Automne Messiaen 2008, dedicated to the organization and coordination of events to mark the centenary of the birth of Olivier Messiaen, the Montreal community will be filled to the brim with Messiaen's music. It was therefore inevitable to introduce the audience to Messiaen's musical world with the interpretation of the work that would put a definitive imprint on his experimental evolution. The Quatuor pour la fin du temps bears the stamp of an essentially immaterial musical language, a sign of the musical researchs that the composer would undertake in the future. To this day, this quartet remains a poignant tribute to life and humanity. No other chamber piece could encompass so effectively all that Messiaen can offer. Also on the program, and therefore further exploring the French School of music, the Première Rhapsodie pour clarinette et piano by Debussy and the Sonate pour violon et violoncelle by Ravel.

A versatile musician with an acrobatic mastery of the keyboard, Louise Bessette is appreciated throughout the world. She performs frequently with renowned formations and is seen regularly in festivals throughout Europe and America. She won the First Prize at the Concours International de Musique Contemporaine in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the First Prize and the Special Prize for Piano at the International Gaudeamus Competition, the 1991 Flandre-Québec Award, and the Prix Opus for "soloist of the year" 1996-97, awarded by the Conseil Québécois de la Musique. Piano teacher at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal since 1996, she is transmitting to young virtuosos her passionate love of music.

MONTREAL CELEBRATES THE PHILOSOPHY AND THE MUSIC OF OLIVIER MESSIAEN

2008 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Olivier Messiaen, and Montreal will be part of the celebrations taking place all over the world since January. An exciting musical autumn, filled to the brim with discoveries, was put together by pianist Louise Bessette, brains and artistic coordinator of Automne Messiaen 2008. With Maestro Kent Nagano, conductor and musical director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and composer Gilles Tremblay, both joining the event as honorary patrons, Louise Bessette is therefore inviting the neophyte as well as the connoisseur to a big musical feast, a tribute to one of the greatest French composers.

Olivier Messiaen

Born in Avignon, on December 10, 1908, Olivier Messiaen is a shining light among composers of the 20th century. Organist at the Église de la Trinité in Paris, teacher at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and tireless ornithologist, Messiaen humbly spoke of his times through his compositions. He influenced an entire generation of composers, bringing them to grasp the incredible liberties they were being offered. Fascinated by Japan and its traditions, this « ornithologist and rhythmician » as he used to describe himself, transmitted to the musical world a touching cry to length through the importance of its rhythmical value. His famous Treatise of rhythm, colors and ornithology is the silent witness of the monumental task Messiaen undertook. However, what remains is the total amount of his works, colored by the powerful Messiaen signature, this extraordinary sensibility which rooted him to his times, wrapped in an utopian hope that provided him with latitudes only he would dare to envision.

Québec-France collaboration

Undeniable pianist of the international scene and muse to the contemporary world, Louise Bessette is the natural spokeperson for the unique and sensitive musical world of Olivier Messiaen. This is why the idea to pay tribute to the illustrious composer on a large scale presented itself spontaneously. Motivated by the French association Messiaen 2008, whose goal is to coordinate, lenghthen and promote the ensemble of events dedicated to the composer, in France as well as internationally, Louise Bessette imagined a regrouping of artists who would share the same goal for Québec. All she needed then were meetings with the Montreal musical community as a whole. Their enthusiastic answers came pouring in. An exciting and diversified season was built, grouping an impressive number of highly recognized performers as well as young promising artists, therefore honoring the important composer and teacher who was Olivier Messiaen.

Louise Bessette

The work of Olivier Messiaen has always been a part of Louise Bessette's career. Fascinated by his musical world as she was pursuing her studies at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, she went to Paris to study with Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen, the wife of the composer, and devoured her precious teachings. She eventually met Olivier Messiaen on different occasions and was present at the creation of his opera Saint-François d'Assise. Since those days, Louise Bessette has always made a point of playing his works on a regular basis and has managed to impressively enlarge her repertoire of his music. She has recorded many of his pieces, gathering through the years numerous laudatory reviews and prizes, all emphasizing the importance of her musical input and artistic career. « Messiaen found in Louise Bessette a prodigious performer. » (Yves Allaz, Journal de Genève, December 1996). « Like Maestro Messiaen, Louise Bessette is first an ear that enjoys the sensuality of sounds, that adores joy, that meditates with devotion and most importantly, that is always surprised by the beauty of these creations. » (François Tousignant, Le Devoir, October 2000). The public will hear her performing regularly during the fall as she will play such masterpieces as the complete Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus, the Quatuor pour la fin du temps, Des canyons aux étoiles, Sept Haïkaï, Trois petites liturgies de la présence divine, and Oisaux exotiques.

Thanks to this neverending passion that inhabits Louise Bessette in regards to Olivier Messiaen, Automne Messiaen 2008 will celebrate joy and life through the philosophy and the work of a French composer that has done so much to enrich and enlighten the music of the XX century.

The audience will be invited to hear organ pieces as well as Cinq Rechants, and the Quatuor pour la fin du temps, with Simon Aldrich (clarinet), Louise Bessette (piano), Jonathan Crow (violin) and Yegor Dyachkov (cello). Also on the bill, Le temps des impossibles, a quartet from young quebecer composer Nicolas Gilbert, his musical tribute to Olivier Messiaen, written with the financial support of The Canada Council for the Arts.

It is with an imposing work of Messiaen that conductor Walter Boudreau has decided to begin the 43rd season of the SMCQ. Pairing together pianist Louise Bessette and the ensemble of the SMCQ, this concert will present a single work: Des canyons aux étoiles.

The works of Olivier Messiaen are amongst the most important of the repertoire of the 20th century for organ. The first edition of the Concours International d'Orgue du Canada will award the best performer of his music with the Prix Messiaen, a scholarship of 5 000 $. It is during the second round that the qualified candidates will present two works by Messiaen.

• Olivier Messiaen and the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal

The music institution will embark on a series of concert-events around Olivier Messiaen. The students will perform a variety of his solo and chamber works at the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur, on October 25 and 26, time to be determined. Following that, with conductors Raffi Armenian and Louis Lavigueur, and with pianist Louise Bessette, the musicians of the Orchestre du Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal will play Sept Haïkaï and Trois petites liturgies de la présence divine at the Salle Pierre-Mercure of the Centre Pierre-Péladeau, on October 27 at 8PM. Finally, with conductor Véronique Lacroix, Louise Bessette and the Ensemble de Musique Contemporaine du Conservatoire will render their own vision of Oiseaux Exotiques, at the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur, on December 13, at 8PM.

The McGill Symphony Orchestra, with conductor Alexis Hauser, will tackle Les offrandes oubliées, the very first composition of Messiaen that was played for a large audience.

• Automne Messiaen 2008 and the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur

So as to be part of the celebrations, the Chapelle Historique du Bon-Pasteur will offer many recitals with some of the greatest musicians. Pianist Louis-Philippe Pelletier will present a recital filled with Debussy and Messiaen music, on November 20, at 8PM. The Quatuor pour la fin du temps, with Simon Aldrich (clarinet), Louise Bessette (piano), Jonathan Crow (violin) and Yegor Dyachkov (cello) will be presented again on November 26 at 8PM. Another important rendez-vous is the one in which Louise Bessette will present the complete Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus. Let us mention here that she has won the Prix Opus « Soloist of the year » for her magnificient rendering of this masterpiece at Pollack Hall in 1997. This « return » will happen on December 10 at 8PM, birthday of Olivier Messiaen.

• Notre-Dame and the gathering of internationals organ players

Location: Basilique Notre-Dame

Under the initiative of Pierre Grandmaison, holder of the organs at the Basilique Notre-Dame, international organists will travel to Montreal to perform the entire catalogue of Messiaen's works for organ. This special celebration will take place on December 10, time to be determined.

• Studio 12 of Radio-Canada

Date: December 11, at 8PM

The radio of Société Radio-Canada will open its doors and invite the public to congregate at studio 12 so that they may listen to a live transmission of a tribute concert to Olivier Messiaen. Even though the program is shrouded in secrecy, the outcome of the event promises to be highly pleasurable, surprising and intimate. A little secret not to be missed.

• Saint-François d'Assise, a great premiere with the OSM!

Date: December 5 and 9, at 8PM

Location: Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of Place des Arts

Eminent specialist of Messiaen, Maestro Kent Nagano is distinguishing himself from other conductors by celebrating his mentor with the opera Saint-François d'Assise. Chorus, orchestra and soloists will work together so as to give full justice to one of the most significant works of the last 25 years. Needless to say, these two evenings will culminate the events of Automne Messiaen 2008 and be the highlight of a very exciting fall line-up.

Add to this list other events in the works and one can sense that even the most distinguished lover of Messiaen's music will be tickled by a musical offering out of the ordinary. Let the celebration begin!!
