Portland Symphony Orchestra Extends Music Director Contract with Robert Moody Through 2015/16
PORTLAND, Maine - The Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) announced at Thursday’Äôs Board of Trustees meeting an extension of Robert Moody’Äôs initial three-year contract as Music Director for five years through the PSO’Äôs 91st season in 2015-2016.
"Now that I am in my second season with the PSO, I feel the chemistry with the orchestra is stronger than ever and continues to grow," said Moody. "Musicians, audiences, and the community are all responding to our vision of relevance and quality. This decision was easy, and I am truly excited to see what we can do."

Highlights of Moody’Äôs tenure with the PSO include a sold-out endowment benefit concert with Renˆ©e Fleming, record attendance during the first season, and the organization’Äôs return to break-even operations. The first two seasons have also included critically acclaimed performances and Maine premieres of Mason Bates’Äô Liquid Interface, James Demars’Äô Senegalese drumming/dance concerto Sabar, and Brett Dietz’Äôs Headcase; collaborations with Portland Stage, Portland Ballet, the Choral Art Society, the Portland Community Chorus, and the Museum of African Culture, and the introduction of the innovative webisode series ’ÄúOnline Insights’Äù featured on YouTube. Moody also took the reins in 2009 leading the Symphony’Äôs 11-concert Magic of Christmas series, and generated the first uptick in paid attendance since 2001.
In addition to his appointment in Portland, Moody retains his current positions as Music Director of the Winston-Salem Symphony (N.C.) which he has led since 2005, and as Artistic Director of Arizona Musicfest, which he has led since 2007.
Founded in 1923, the Portland Symphony Orchestra is among Maine’Äôs most recognized and accessible performing arts organizations. The Symphony is a musical hub for 82 of New England's finest professional musicians and teachers, annually impacts over 40,000 individuals from ages 4 to 104 in the experience of live orchestral music, and operates on a budget of $2.5 million.
