Kawartha Youth Orchestra's Music Fte Concert
Peterborough, ON - The Kawartha Youth Orchestra [KYO] present their first concert of 2010, "Music Fte" on Sunday, February 21st at 3pm in their new concert venue, The Great Hall. Located in Trent University?s Champlain College, this venue is fully accessible and possesses a generous acoustic atmosphere for this special concert that brings together some startling local talent.
Violinist Tak Kwan, known to many as the Concertmaster of the Peterborough Symphony will feature in Mendelssohn's lavish Violin Concerto in e, and audience members will also enjoy a guest appearance by student musicians of the Accademia Musica school in Mozart's famous Eine kleine Nachtmusik serenade for strings.
TAK KWAN began playing the violin at age seven, his studies taking him to places such as Hong Kong, England, the US and Canada. He was invited to perform as a soloist as early as 16 years, with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Ensemble. His profession as a violinist was confirmed by winning numerous competitions and scholarships, and he has appeared as a guest soloist on violin and viola for the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, Quinte Symphony Orchestra and Scarborough Philharmonic. He has earned great critical reviews and has established a reputation as a soloist.
Touring since 2002, Kwan has traveled and performed throughout the US and Ontario, Canada, and in 2003 and 2007, Kwan performed for a crowd of 20,000 in Toronto and Tampa, Florida. Tak Kwan also takes the time to develop the coming generation in music, as a violin instructor at the Scarborough Music Summer Camp (2000-2001) and is currently teaching at Bishop Strachan School as well as Toronto Music School. The concerto he will be performing with the KYO is Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in e which has been described as "the dearest of all German violin concertos, the heart's jewel."
ACCADEMIA MUSICA is a private music instruction program founded in 1988 in Peterborough, Ontario by violin/piano duo Witold and Ewa Swoboda. The program offers high quality private music instruction for Kawartha area students of all levels. Beginners as young as age 3 are taught a program based on the Suzuki method and philosophy, while more advanced students often choose to work towards all levels of Royal Conservatory exams up to the ARCT.
The chamber music program for strings is an integral part of the students? musical development and takes place in the form of bi-monthly group lessons with Mr. Swoboda. It is this group of students that will be joining the KYO on February 21st in Mozart?s Eine kleine Nachtmusik. They will also give a sneak-peak performance together with KYO members at the Peterborough Symphony concert on February 13th at Showplace, during intermission.
"I want to involve younger kids in the Mozart performance to introduce them to the orchestra where there older friends perform, and to encourage them to audition for [the KYO] this summer," says Program Director and KYO String coach, Witold Swoboda. "They are all very excited about it and there is a great deal of positive energy in both the kids and their parents." The group's eighteen members hail from all over the region, and include one student on exchange from China. Comprised of a mix of string players and woodwind players, these young musicians will join forces with guest artists to tackle Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik serenade for strings with Accademia Musica, and the first movement of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in e with soloist Tak Kwan. Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre, op. 40 will feature our own Concertmistress, Claire Motyer in a special violin solo that requires an unusual retuning of her violin! Dvorak's Slavonic Dance no. 8, op. 46, de Falla's Ritual Fire Dance and Bizet?s L'ArlŠsienne Suite no. 1 round out the concert program.
Each KYO musician has an opportunity to research and compose program notes for the season?s concerts, and for "Music Fte", violinist Emily Clark Campbell (Peterborough, ON), will be one of five musicians contributing for this concert. Emily notes that Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik or "a little serenade" "is one of the most recognized passages of music ever written. A majority of the population has heard Eine kleine Nachtmusik but may not be able to name it. It has been used in numerous movie soundtracks and TV."
