Montreal, December 11, 2009 ’Äì Schulich School of Music Students end the year with prizes and nominations from the OSM Standard Life Competition, The Canada Council for the Arts and the Recording Academy.
OSM Standard Life Competition
Masters students Tristan Longval-Gagnˆ©, piano and Benjamin Duinker, percussion have each won first prizes at the 70th OSM Standard Life Competition, held November 18-21. Longval-Gagnˆ© won $10,000 in the piano category (class A) and also claimed the $2,000 prize for ’ÄúBest Performance of a Canadian Work,’Äù and also received an Orford Arts Center prize, covering tuition and accommodation for a two-week music session at the Orford Arts Center in 2010. Duinker, who won the $10,000 first prize in the percussion category, also claimed a $2,000 prize for ’ÄúBest Performance of a Canadian Work’Äù in the percussion category. In addition to the first place wins, percussion student Noam Bierstone won third prize in that category and received the Domaine Forget Prize, a scholarship covering tuition and accommodation for a two-week music session at Domaine Forget in 2010.

Graduate voice students Jonathan Woody and Garry McLinn, vocal students of baritone Sanford Sylvan, are part of a cast recording of John Musto’Äôs ’ÄòVolpone,’Äô which has been nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording. The Grammy Awards are the only peer-presented award to honour artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry without regard to album sales or chart position. The 52 Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2010.
Jules Lˆ©ger Prize
Doctoral Composition Student Jimmie LeBlanc won the Canada Council for the Arts 2009 Jules Lˆ©ger Prize for New Chamber Music for his work ’ÄúL’ÄôEspace intˆ©rieur du monde’Äù. The work was created for 15 musicians and electronics, and premiered in March 2008 in Lyon, France by the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne. The $7500 prize, established in 1978, is designed to encourage the creation of new Canadian chamber music and to encourage its performance by Canadian ensembles. LeBlanc’Äôs winning work will be broadcast nationally by CBC Radio 2 and also by Radio Canada’Äôs Espace-Musique at a later date.
