Single tickets available now for the Sixth Honens International Piano Competition
CALGARY, AB, August 31, 2009 ’Äì Single tickets to the Sixth Honens International Piano Competition, which takes place October 22 to November 6, 2009, are on sale now. Twenty-one pianists from Canada, China, Ecuador/Spain, Hong Kong, Israel, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States will compete for one of the competition world’Äôs most lucrative career development programs valued at more than $500,000 in addition to $100,000 in cash prizes.
The Competition includes 24 afternoon and evening performance sessions: 14 Quarterfinals concerts; six Semifinals concerts; two Finals concerts; as well as Rob Kapilow’Äôs What Makes It Great? ’Äì a discovery of art song and lieder featuring members of Calgary Opera’Äôs Emerging Artist Development Program; and an evening of improvisation with Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero. The Competition also offers free community concerts and pre-concert Music as a Second Language(MSL) music appreciation performance-lectures. In addition to its triennial Competition Honens continues to build its prestigious reputation through presenting its winners on the world’Äôs most important concert stages and by bringing the world’Äôs leading musicians to Calgary for exclusive Canadian performances.
Minsoo Sohn, First Laureate of the 2006 Honens International Piano Competition makes recital debuts at Glenn Gould Studio (Toronto) and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York) on October 3 and 8 respectively. The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra also presents Sohn in performances of Chopin’Äôs Second Piano Concerto on October 16 and 17 in Calgary.
Honens also presents the Canadian exclusive and premiere of superstar Leif Ove Andsnes’Äô PicturesReframed on November 16 ’Äì a multimedia project featuring the work of conceptual artist Robin Rhode and Mussorgsky’Äôs Pictures at an Exhibition. This performance, the first after the project’Äôs world premiere at New York’Äôs Lincoln Center, makes only five North American stops, and is already sold-out in New York, Washington DC and Houston.
