March 2009 - Next The Music Scene, La Scena Musicale and La SCENA

[Version franˆßaise]

It’Äôs a busy March as we work on three magazines: The Music Scene Ontario Spring 2009 issue, La Scena Musicale April 2009 issue and La SCENA’Äôs Spring 2009 issue featuring on the cover an exclusive interview with Robert Lepage.

The Music Scene Ontario’Äôs Spring issue comes out March 24 and features our annual Guide to Summer Music and Arts Camps, as well as our Guide to International Arts Festivals, both essential tools to organize the summer. On the cover, The St. Lawrence String Quartet celebrates their 20th anniversary and looks back at their incredible career. Joseph So looks into the history behind Monteverdi’Äôs L’Äôincoronazione di Poppea and its period production by Opera Atelier, and Jeanne Lamon talks about Tafelmusik’Äôs approach to Haydn with their upcoming performance of his Creation. Also featured is Quartetto Gelato’Äôs reentrance into the touring scene with their two newest members, and a look into the dynamic Calgary Opera. In addition, our International Festival picks, Southern Ontario Vocal and Instrumental Previews and CD Reviews. The Music Scene Ontario will be distributed in Toronto and Ottawa and music schools across Canada. The deadline for advertising is March 17.

On the cover of La SCENA is Canadian director Robert Lepage who discusses his new theatre production The Blue Dragon and his operatic staging. Reviews of Blue Dragon and Lepage’Äôs staging of Berlioz’Äôs Damnation of Faust will also accompany the feature. La Scena Musicale’Äôs April issue (inserted in La SCENA) will feature young Canadian violinist Caroline Chehadˆ© and the April Discovery CD is an unpublished Schubert recital of Canadian soprano Colette Boky who recently published her autobiography. The combined issue will also contain our 2nd annual guide to International arts and classical music festivals. The deadline for advertising is March 23rd.

Reach over 50,000 readers with 25,000 copies distributed in Montreal and the province of Quebec. La Scena Musicale/La SCENA contains award-winning editorial features, an extensive calendar of events (province of Quebec including radio and TV listings) and product reviews; readers consult each issue 4.5 times a month, generating 225,000 viewings per month. The Music Scene also features excellent editorial and 50,000 readers, only without a detailed calendar.

Petition: Restore Canada Council Funding to Controlled-Circulation Magazines

The Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) has recently dropped support for controlled-circulation print magazines in its 2010 application process, rendering La Scena Musicale (LSM), The Music Scene Ontario and La SCENA ineligible to compete for CCA grants.

In 2007-08, the Canada Council funded 106 arts & literary magazines for a total of $2,661,900. We feel that all arts and literary magazines should be treated equally and fairly, and this means the ability to submit an application that is reviewed by a peer jury. Consequently, La Scena Musicale has launched a campaign to reverse the Canada Council policy change.

Please show your support for all controlled-circulation arts magazines (including our family of magazine) by signing up and circulate this appeal.
