Montral, le 10 fvrier 2009 La 25e saison dI Musici de Montral se poursuit sur ses notes festives. Maestro Yuli Turovsky accueille avec humour larrive du Buf de la nouvelle anne chinoise. Flamboyante soire prsente en collaboration avec le Festival MONTRAL EN LUMIRE, Les bufs envahissent Paris! samnent avec clat dans un dploiement musical tincelant. Tout dabord, la divine Symphonie Paris de Mozart, puis la Suite Carmen de Shchedrin qui nen sera que plus percutante avec LEnsemble percussion Sixtrum. Et en finale, Le Buf sur le toit de Milhaud un spectacle surraliste originalement conu par Jean Cocteau sera cette fois-ci mis en scne par Alexandre Marine. Plonge circassienne dans lunivers dun bordel parisien, Marine nous promet une adaptation des plus dbrides. Situations absurdes ou burlesques, Marine jongle avec drision des scnes quotidiennes peu banales. Pour cette bouffonne aventure, le metteur en scne sentoure de deux comdiens de sa compagnie, Vitali Makarov et Maria Monakhova, et de huit tudiants et finissants de lcole nationale de cirque. Fantaisie, virtuosit et espiglerie seront au rendez-vous pour cette escapade parisienne du 25 fvrier prochain.
Le Buf sur le toit : de la Prohibition au lupanar
Compos par Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), Le Buf sur le toit se distingue par son exubrance, ses airs de music-hall et sa musique brsilienne. Milhaud envisageait cette ptillante partition pour un film muet de Charlie Chaplin. Mais cest plutt Jean Cocteau qui la imagin en un ballet-pantomime avec les clowns du cirque Mdrano les Fratellini et situant laction dans un bar amricain lpoque de la Prohibition. Alexandre Marine, lun des fondateurs du Thtre Deuxime Ralit, (T2R) signe avec Le Buf sa cinquime mise en scne pour I Musici. Contrairement la mise en scne originale, il campe plutt Le Buf dans un autre lieu.
(Ķ) Notre adaptation de cette collaboration entre Milhaud et Cocteau nous mnera plutt dans un bordel de Paris o se croisent prostitues et clients. Univers de sexe et de drogue avec tout ce que cela suppose, au son de l'tincelante musique de Milhaud inspir par des airs brsiliens. Un vrai carrefour culturel, comme l'est le Paris d'aujourd'hui. Et Maestro Turovsky de rajouter : (Ķ) que Milhaud ait song Charlie Chaplin ne nous a pas chapp puisque notre adaptation est avant tout une comdie! Chasss-croiss de personnages hauts en couleurs et interprts par les acteurs Maria Monakhova (Madame, au bordel) et Vitali Makarov (grant du bar). La distribution comprend galement des tudiants de lcole nationale de cirque : Kaelyn Schmitt (prostitue 1 qui rve de devenir pilote), Vanessa Vollering (prostitue 2, mre monoparentale), Bridie Hooper (prostitue 3, prostitue-ne), Gregory Arsenal R. (videur 1), Yannick Thomas (videur 2), Giulio Lanzafame (client timide), Joachim Ciocca (drogu et tte brle) et Matthew Holsbeke (policier malchanceux). En guise de dcor, une toile monumentale conue par lartiste-peintre Natasha Turovsky, violoniste dI Musici et fille du Maestro. Suite Carmen ou la danse des percussions
N en 1932, Rodion Shchedrin est considr comme lun des compositeurs russes les plus clbres de sa gnration. Compose lintention de son pouse, la danseuse toile Maya Plisetskaya, sa Suite Carmen se dploie en 13 numros. De luvre originale de Bizet, Rodion Shchedrin dcida de conserver uniquement la section des cordes et dajouter plusieurs percussions. La section rythmique sera brillamment reprsente par Sixtrum, un sextuor de percussionnistes chevronns qui semploie faire dcouvrir les classiques du rpertoire de percussion (Cage, Kagel, Xenakis). Cr en 2007, Sixtrum regroupe des percussionnistes D'Arcy Philip Gray, Julien Grgoire, Philip Hornsey, Kristie Ibrahim, Robert Leroux et Fabrice Marandola parmi les plus actifs de la scne montralaise. Mozart (1756-1791) a crit sa Symphonie Paris en exploitant le got franais de lpoque. Plusieurs critiques ont mme soulign quil sagissait plutt dune parodie. Quoiquil en soit avec cette Symphonie, le compositeur autrichien stait assur quil plairait son auditoire. Lhistoire lui donna raison puisque le public accueillit cette uvre dans un dbordement de joie et deffervescence. PROGRAMME

Montral, February 10, 2009 With its 25th season I Musici de Montral continues its celebrations. Maestro Yuli Turovsky welcomes with humour the arrival of Oxen for the new Chinese year! This flamboyant presentation of Oxen invade Paris! is produced in collaboration with the MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS FESTIVAL. But to start with, we will hear the beautiful Paris Symphony by Mozart followed by the Carmen Suite in its treatment by Shchedrin of Bizets immortal work here with the participation of the LEnsemble percussion Sixtrum. And then finally, Le Buf sur le toit by Milhaud a surrealist spectacle originally conceived by Jean Cocteau this time directed by Alexandre Marine. Plunged into the circus atmosphere of a Parisian bordello, Marine promises us an unrestrained adaptation that juggles the banal daily scenes of a house of ill repute. For this buffoonery, the director has invited two actors from his company Vitali Makarov and Maria Monakhova and eight students from lcole nationale de cirque. Fantasy, virtuosity and mischief will be the order of the day for this Parisian escapade on February 25.
Le Buf sur le toit : from Prohibition to a brothel
Composed by Darius Milhaud (1892-1974), Le Buf sur le toit is distinguished by its exuberance, its music hall atmosphere and its Brazilian melodies. Milhaud envisaged this sparkling score for a silent film by Charlie Chaplin. But its was finally Jean Cocteau who imagined it as a ballet-pantomime with clowns from the Mdrano Circus the Fratellini and placed the action in an American bar in the era of Prohibition. Alexandre Marine, one of the founding members of the Thtre Deuxime Ralit (T2R), directs our version of Le Buf. It is his fifth stage direction for I Musici. Contrary to the original stage setting, Alexandre Marine places Le Buf in another place. ĶOur adaptation of this collaboration between Cocteau and Milhaud will shift focus and take us back to Paris, to a brothel with prostitutes, and the characters that frequent them. A world of sex and drugs, and everything in between. All set to Milhaud's brilliant Brazilian variations and arrangements. A true cultural intersection, like present-day Paris. And Maestro Turovsky adds, ĶI think that Milhaud's thinking of Charlie Chaplin wasn't left unnoticed in our version at least as far as the humor is concerned. A great mix of very colourful characters will be interpreted by Maria Monakhova (the Madame of the bordello) and Vitali Makarov (Manager). The cast also includes students from lcole nationale de cirque: Kaelyn Schmitt (Prostitute 1 - with a dream of becoming a pilot), Vanessa Vollering (Prostitute 2, single mother), Bridie Hooper (Prostitute 3 - prostitute by nature), Gregory Arsenal R. (Bouncer 1), Yannick Thomas (Bouncer 2), Giulio Lanzafame (Timide Client), Joachim Ciocca (Junkie Crackhead) and Matthew Holsbeke (Unfortunate Policeman). Born in 1932, Rodion Shchedrin is considered as one of the most celebrated composers of his generation. Written for his wife, the star dancer, Maya Plisetskaya, his Carmen Suite consists of 13 episodes. From the original work by Bizet, Rodion Shchedrin decided to conserve uniquely the string section and then add several percussion instruments. The rhythmic component will be brilliantly executed by Sixtrum, a sextet of well-known percussionists whose main goal is bring to audiences the classics of percussion repertoire (Cage, Kagel, Xenakis). Created in 2007, Sixtrum is composed of DArcy Philip Gray, Julien Grgoire, Philip Hornsey, Kristie Ibrahim, Robert Leroux and Fabrice Marandola some of the most active percussionists in the Montreal scene. Mozart (1756-1791) wrote his Paris Symphony exploiting the French taste of the period. Some critics have even stated that it is perhaps a parody. Whatever its intention, the Austrian composer made sure to delight his audience. History has proven him right as the public has always enjoyed its overflowing joy and effervescence. PROGRAM
