Miro Quartet plays Walter Hall on Feb 2


CELEBRATED MIRO QUARTET PLAYS WALTER HALL IN SERIES DEBUT

TORONTO ’Äì The young, dynamic MIRO QUARTET will make its first appearance on the Faculty of Music Chamber Music Series on Monday, February 2 at 7:30 pm in Walter Hall. The program will include Mendelssohn’Äôs Quartet in D Major, Op. 44, No. 1, Dvorak’Äôs Quartet in F Major, Op. 96, ’ÄúAmerican’Äù and the Canadian premiˆ®re of Credo (2007) by American composer Kevin Puts. Tickets ($25 adults and $15 seniors/students) can be purchased at the box office in person or by calling 416-978-3744. Walter Hall is located in the Edward Johnson Building, 80 Queen's Park (Museum subway stop).

As part of their visit to the Faculty of Music, the Mirˆ„ Quartet will host a chamber music master class featuring student chamber ensembles from the Faculty of Music on Tuesday, February 3 from 10 am to 1 pm. The master class will be held in the Dining Hall at 90 Wellesley Street West, and is open to the public free of charge.

One of America's highest-profile chamber groups, the MIRO QUARTET has risen to the top of the international chamber music scene in only a decade, captivating audiences and critics around the world with its youthful intensity and mature interpretations. Founded in 1995 at the Oberlin Conservatory by violinists Daniel Ching and Sandy Yamamoto, violist John Largess, and cellist Joshua Gindele, the Quartet met with immediate success, winning first prize at the 50th annual Coleman Chamber Music Competition in April 1996, and taking both the first and grand prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition two months later. Earning first prize at the 1998 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Mirˆ„ Quartet also won the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 2000. In 2005, the Quartet was the first ensemble to be awarded the coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, and received the Cleveland Quartet Award that year as well. The Mirˆ„ Quartet is Faculty String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Texas at Austin.

Recent Mirˆ„ Quartet seasons have included concerts in some of the world's most important concert venues, such as Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, the Berlin Philharmonic's Kammermusiksaal, the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and at the Dresden Music Festival. The Mirˆ„ Quartet has been Quartet-in-Residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Two, and was named to the Distinctive Debut Series of Carnegie Hall, which provided for a local concert and debut appearances in Cologne, Stockholm, Brussels, London, Vienna, Amsterdam and Athens. The ensemble made its Tokyo debut in 2001 in a concert benefiting families and victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The Mirˆ„ Quartet has been heard on numerous national radio broadcasts, including National Public Radio's Performance Today and Minnesota Public Radio's Saint Paul Sunday. Internationally, it has been featured on radio networks across Europe, Canada and Israel. The Quartet has also been seen on NBC's Today Show, ABC's World News Tonight and on various programs of the Canadian Broadcasting Company. At the invitation of Isaac Stern, the Quartet performed in a live broadcast at the Jerusalem Music Center in Israel and was featured in the PBS-TV "American Masters" documentary "Isaac Stern: Life's Virtuoso".
