IN THE BEGINNINGĶ Wednesday November 5, 2008, 8 pm Pollack Hall
LOrchestre de chambre I Musici de Montral Montral, November 3, 2008 To highlight this anniversary program I Musici will play pieces that were an important part of the repertoire in the beginning, as well as a special composition chosen to end the program. The concert will open with two Concerti Grossi de Handel, works which set the standard for instrumental music. Since the beginning of the orchestra, Maestro Turovskys important connection to the world of Shostakovich has also been a feature of I Musicis repertoire from the very beginning. Scherzo by Andr Prvost was the first of many Quebec works that I Musici has played all over the world. Maestro Yuli Turovsky concludes the program with Variations on Happy Birthday by Peter Heidrich to underline, in a very amusing fashion, the 25th anniversary of I Musici. In the beginningĶ in 1983 Twenty-five years ago the cellist Yuli Turovsky invited a small group of string players to tape performances of Handels 12 Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 for the Socit Radio-Canada. Ten years later, in 1993, I Musici received a Rosette from the Penguin Guide and named the Concerti Grossi on the recording as a reference for these works. Georg Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) During the fall of 1739, Handel presented some of his Concerti Grossi specifically composed for these occasions at Londons Theatre Royal. Published by John Walsh as Twelve Grand Concertos Opus 6 these compositions were rank among Handel's finest achievements in the realm of instrumental music. For this great work by the German composer, harpsichordist and well know specialist in early music, Jol Thiffault, will join I Musici. In his eighth string quartet, composed over only three days, Shostakovitch depicts war and all its horrors. This quartet, with its sombre atmosphere, funereal waltz and strong percussive chords closes with an epitaph for the victims of fascism and war. Composed in 1960, the quartet quotes themes from certain preceding works of which one is a revolutionary song. ANDR PRVOST (1934-2001) Part of a family originally from Saint-Jrme, Andr Prvost was born in Ontario. Composer and teacher, he taught at the University of Montreal from 1964 to 1996. In 1986, he became an Officer of the Order of Canada. Among his most celebrated works is Terre des Hommes, a composition for double orchestra, three choirs and two narrators, inspired by a poem of Michle Lalonde and chosen for the inauguration of Expo 67. His Scherzo written in 1960 for string orchestra evokes a highly communicative stravinskien rhythm with much good humour that will perhaps recall the music of Mendelssohn. PETER HEIDRICH (b. 1935) And for a refreshing finale, I Musici plays the highly appropriate Variations on Happy Birthday by Peter Heidrich. This piece by the German violinist and composer consist of a series of eleven variations written in as many different styles. Composed in 1994, these variations are inspired by, amongst others, the compositions of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, ragtime, film music and even dances like waltzes and tangos. Variations by Peter Heidrich are pure entertainment. BBC Classical Review 2003
