Toronto, Ont’Ķ Internationally renowned British bass-baritone Pavlo Hunka and the Ukrainian Art Song Project present an evening reception to introduce classical music lovers to Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko’Äôs art songs. This event will be held on Monday, May 26, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre in the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
Hosted by CBC Radio personality Catherine Belyea, the evening includes presentations by Russell Braun, Pavlo Hunka, and Lesia Babiak, coordinator of the Mykola Lysenko Art Song Project. Live musical performances of Lysenko’Äôs repertoire will be performed by Hunka, soprano Monica Whicher and mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabˆ„.
Mykola Lysenko The Art Songs is the second CD in The Ukrainian Art Song Series. This six CD collection will feature 124 songs, performed by 14 of Canada’Äôs, acclaimed classical vocalists and instrumentalists, including: Hunka, Whicher, Szabˆ„, as well as Isabel Bayrakdarian, soprano; Allyson McHardy, mezzo-soprano; Elizabeth Turnbull, contralto; Benjamin Butterfield, tenor; Michael Colvin, tenor; Russell Braun, baritone; Robert Gleadow, bass; Doug Stewart, Principal Flute, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra; Roman Borys, cello; Serouj Kradjian, piano; Mia Bach, piano, and Albert Krywolt, piano.
On September 14, 2006, the Ukrainian Art Song Project under the auspices of the Canadian Ukrainian Opera Association launched the critically acclaimed Kyrylo Stetsenko The Art Songs, the debut CD in the Ukrainian Art Song Series. This project was founded by Hunka to preserve the multitude of glorious repertoire by Ukrainian composers, as well as introduce it to the world some of which has never been heard.
Born in England to a Ukrainian father and an English mother, Pavlo Hunka embarked on a music career following his studies in Modern Languages and a reputable career as a lawyer. He has performed in more than 70 operas, including 45 major operatic roles in the world’Äôs leading opera houses; and with many of the world’Äôs most renowned conductors. He made his Toronto debut with the Canadian Opera Company in 2004, and did so to great acclaim singing the title role of Verdi’Äôs Falstaff and in the role of Hunding in Wagner’Äôs Die Walkˆºre. In the COC’Äôs 2007 ’Äì 2008 season Hunka performed in Leo‰° Janˆ°Ÿçek’Äôs From the House of the Dead and Debussy’Äôs Pelleas et Mˆ©lisande.
